Tell Us Your Story

You too are a part of Detroit Today! What is your connection to the neighborhood, city, region, or state? Do you live downtown, or in Birmingham, or Sault Ste Marie? No matter where you live, you are a part of the local landscape and likely have something wonderful to share with WDET listeners.

We're interested in hearing the stories, memories, and experiences that have shook your core and made you think in news ways.

  • When was your last "eureka," or as Oprah calls "a-ha!" moment?
  • What have you learned about the community in which you live, and why are you grateful for having learned it?
  • When were you last in awe of something or someone, and what was going through your head at the time?
  • Do you feel strongly about something happening in the news? Is your perspective unique and multi-faceted?

The aforementioned prompts are offered just as a starting point. Take this essay where you think it should go. If we do decide to move forward, we"ll then work together on getting it ready for air. Be personal, and anecdotal, and conversational. Don't just tell us…SHOW us!

Write your story/essay/commentary in 300-500 words. Remember, you're writing for radio, not print. If your essay is really compelling, and has a connection to a segment we're working on, we"ll invite you into our studio to read and record it. Therefore, you should write with the idea of being able to comfortably read your own words aloud.

You can listen to one of our favorite essays here.

The language is simple and lucid, and as we hear Ms. Anderson read her own words, it"s apparent that she means what she says, and that she really cares.

If you do decide to submit something to us, we can't guarantee it will make it to air. Don"t let this discourage you; even if your words don't find a larger audience, you now have something you can share with a friend, parent, or neighbor. Besides, writing can be really cathartic, right?!

After you've written your essay, submit it to detroittoday@wdet.org. In the subject box, type "essay submission + your name + where you live."
