Poor Forecast For Retail Sales
Oct 9, 2008
Automotive & Business

Michigan retailers have not been spared the sluggish sales that have gripped their national counterparts in what is normally the second biggest shopping season.  WDET’s Heidi Ausgood has the story.

SOQ:

Back-to-School Shopping comes in second to Christmas for retailers.  Traditionally it’s a time when they make most of their money.  But this year has been different.  For Michigan retailers, August sales fell off from July, even though it’s when the bulk of back to school shopping happens.

Tom Scott is Vice President of the Michigan Retailers Association.  He says more than half of his members reported a drop in sales from August a year ago.   Scott says retailers and doing what they can to lure shoppers.

“We’re already into the holiday season a little bit now because a lot of retailers are out there already starring to promote holiday sales especially because they know it going to be a difficult season.

Scott says it’s the 10th month in a row that more of his members reported sales drops than those who reported sales increases.
