Happy 307th, Detroit!
Jul 18, 2008

The Detroit Historical Society celebrates the city’s birthday this weekend.

The society will mark the 307th anniversary of the founding of Fort Pontchartrain by the French explorer Cadillac. This historic event is better known today as the founding of Detroit.

Bob Bury is executive director of the Detroit Historical Society. On Sunday afternoon, the Detroit Historical Museum will come alive with re-enactors telling of life in 1701.

“Will be dressed up as French settlers and Native Americans in full period costumes, and they’ll be sharing a lot of information in very interesting ways about their culture and traditions. And one the new things we will be doing this year is tracing genealogy, looking at your personal background.”

Bury says the family histories will allow people to learn about their possible connections to the founding of what would become the Motor City.

Museum admission for the birthday celebration will be specially priced at $3.07 in honor of the city’s 307th anniversary.

Bury appeared on WDET’s “Detroit Today”.
