Gunther Cunningham meets the media.

January 27, 2009      by Pat Batcheller

Lions’ defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham says it wasn’t easy to leave the Kansas City Chiefs.  He spent 11 of the last 14 seasons in K.C.…including two years as head coach.  But Cunningham says he didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to work with Detroit’s new head coach, Jim Schwartz.  The two worked together for three years with the Tennessee Titans…and Cunningham says he’s happy to be reunited with Schwartz.

“When he wanted—called to have me come up here, you know, I said it was an honor to coach with him and he in turn said that to me, and to have those kind of opportunities come on for you are really really special and I’m really excited to be here.”

The 62-year-old Cunningham has 40 years of coaching experience.  His defenses are known for hounding opposing quarterbacks and causing turnovers.  The Lions defense ranked last in the NFL in 2008.
